Mid-Summer
Container Grooming
Many container plants, such as a coleus, grow very
fast. These plants can become
‘leggy’ and may begin to take over your container. If you cut or pinch back
these plants, the flowers and foliage will look and grow
better. Cutting or pinching back
takes just a few minutes.
Snap off overgrown stems about a third or a half-way back,
just above a healthy set of leaves. This grooming gives the container
plants a neat appearance, and it also encourages a less leggy, more bushy habit — perfect for containers!
Here are some plants that benefit from pinching:
• Browallia Browallia speciosa
• Coleus Solenostemon hybrids
• Dichondra Dichondra spp.
• Joseph’s coat Alternanthera hybrids
• Licorice plant Helichrysum petiolare
• Persian shield Strobilanthes dyeriana
• Sweet potato vine Ipomoea batatas
